The Instruments
For more on the individual instruments, use the navigation panel above. This page offers some general background.
This page is under construction. It will contain an informative and reasonably succinct article addressing the following topics:
- Where did these instruments come from, and how did they develop? Who played them?
- Why did they become obsolete, and how/when/why were they revived?
- Who plays them today, and what is the general state of Early Music performance?
- What are some of the issues that performers/composers face? Overview of the concerns surrounding tuning and temperament. Is it feasible to write chromatic music for these instruments, is there value in attempting to compose in Mean Tone and other historical temperaments, when is or isn't it practical to use non A = 440 pitch, etc.
I'm actively seeking contributors to write this and other articles. Visit this page for more info.
